About Our Founder – Kristian Smith

Kristian Smith, founder and owner of DivisionBass Digital Records, has been immersed in the electronic dance music scene for over three decades. Based in Bristol, United Kingdom, he has been producing Drum & Bass and a wide range of electronic music since the mid-1990s. Before becoming a producer, Kristian built his reputation as a DJ under the name DJ Vinyl Ryder. Throughout the early 1990s and into the mid-2000s, he performed at clubs, raves, and events across the UK, playing an eclectic mix of Hardcore, Jungle, Drum & Bass, Gabba Techno, and Happy Hardcore. In 1995, Kristian launched Katch the Vibe, one of the world's earliest online dance music websites, helping to promote electronic music at a time when the internet was still in its infancy. Over the years, he has released music under a variety of artist names, including Digital Justice, Albert Grimestein, Dark Emotion, DUBST8, The Happy Pessimist, and Kristian Solitude, showcasing his versatility across multiple electronic music genres. In 1997, Kristian founded Vinyl Related Records, which has since evolved into DivisionBass Digital Records an internationally recognised independent label dedicated to discovering and supporting emerging electronic music producers. Alongside running the label, Kristian also promoted the successful DigThis! club nights between 1997 and 2004 in Bristol and Cornwall. These events celebrated a diverse range of music, from classic 1980s disco through to cutting-edge electronic dance music and Drum & Bass, reflecting his passion for bringing people together through music. Today, Kristian continues to produce music, develop new artists, and lead DivisionBass Digital Records with the same passion and commitment that inspired him more than 30 years ago.
